Professional statement

Jim Carson, PhD is a highly experienced psychologist providing teletherapy in 40+ states. His approach emphasizes mindfulness to develop one’s capacities for presence, love, joy, and wellbeing. Although effective in treating a wide range of issues including anxiety and depression, he specializes in three types of concerns:

Trauma therapy: When post-traumatic stress keeps you from working well, having relationships, or enjoying life, this is PTSD. Trauma work often includes narrative exposure, EMDR, parts work, and other strategies. As trauma heals, you gain emotional closure and restore a sense of security, hope, and joy.

Transpersonal psychotherapy: Who we are boils down to much more than just our physical bodies and rational minds. While not associated with any particular form of religion or any particular faith-based beliefs, this therapy draws upon the great wisdom traditions, strengths-based therapy, and Jungian therapy. Difficulties are included as meaningful pathways that can teach us how to live more fully and skillfully.

Psychedelic integration: Promising results have emerged recently from clinical trials of psychedelic-assisted therapies for depression, anxiety, PTSD, and substance use disorders. This is a unique service for clients who seek a safe, confidential space to unpack psychedelic experiences. Dr Carson is a Certified Psychedelic-assisted Therapy Provider (awarded by Integrative Psychiatry Institute). Note that this does not include administration of psychedelic medicines.

Prior to becoming a clinical psychologist, Dr Carson immersed himself in practicing and teaching meditation for many years. Together with his wife Kimberly Carson, MPH, he developed and clinically tested several innovative yoga and meditation-based clinical treatments, including the Mindful Yoga program; and New Harbinger recently published Dr Carson’s Mindful Yoga book, Relax into Yoga for Chronic Pain.

Currently, Dr Carson’s primary employment is as Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, and Psychiatry, at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland.


Message to clients

Development of greater self-knowledge is the necessary foundation for any psychotherapy to be helpful. I have a very unique background and toolbox of solutions that can help you re-discover your inner depths and strengths to better cope with the many stressors that are affecting our lives.

The great humanistic psychologist Carl Rogers showed that for psychotherapy to be effective, it is essential that the therapist relate to each client with “unconditional positive regard.” This is the cornerstone of my approach. I commit myself to working skillfully to assist each client to achieve optimal outcomes through both improving clinical symptoms, and deepening and enhancing quality of life. Strengths that I bring to creating a transformative therapeutic relationship include accepting and meeting each person where they are at, emotional connection, empathy, trust, and authenticity. If you decide you want to give therapy a try, know that I will put our relationship at the center of everything we do together.

I ensure that our expectations are aligned by helping you better understand the concerns for which you are seeking help, and matching those with the best possible solutions. While I am not a fan of diagnoses, labels, and pathologizing every challenge that surfaces, I know that characterizing problems with validated criteria can be useful—and also, diagnoses are unavoidable for the sake of insurance coverage for psychotherapy.
