Professional statement

Jocelyn Lam is an Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Oakland, California. She currently has openings for virtual video sessions.

She is a 2nd generation immigrant, queer and multiply neurodivergent therapist dedicated to providing social justice oriented and anti-oppressive counseling services for BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ and neurodivergent clients. She works with individuals 13+ in a collaborative and empathetic way to understand how systemic forces have allowed them to develop coping mechanisms, while working through ones that have been in the way of becoming the person they want to be.

Jocelyn's strengths include her warmth, acceptance, and sometimes humor, to navigate life's obstacles. Clients often see Jocelyn for a range of issues, including:

1) Postpartum mental health and transition into parenting, particularly with BIPOC parents

2) Eating disorders and body dysmorphia from a Health at Every Size and culturally responsive framework

3) Intergenerational and discrimination related trauma

Her use of Internal Family Systems-informed and psychodynamic techniques allow her to untangle some of the ways that discrimination inform the way we see our bodies and parenting styles. She also blends narrative therapy techniques to develop strength and confidence in the way that clients rewrite their futures in a way they are proud of.

She has worked at the community non-profit Discovery Counseling Center, often seeing clients with intersecting identities, and holding space for the way they interact. Her devotion to working with these clients is informed by her lived experience of being a second generation Chinese and Canadian immigrant and mother, along with other marginalized identities. These experiences created a greater understanding of how we can parent, and re-parent ourselves with compassion, and that we have the power to stop hurtful patterns.

Message to clients

I'm so glad you're here. It can be so hard to function as our best selves when we don't feel like our identities are validated or understood, and I hope to provide a space where we can work towards a story that you are proud of.

Together, we can strengthen your innate resources, identify new skills to develop, and create community. I truly believe that we are capable of more than we know, and sometimes it takes safety and understanding to get there. We can talk, cry, laugh, reflect, and experiment with new skills in our therapy space. I would love to walk beside you as we approach healing.
