Professional statement

Jody Shelby is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker providing Individual and Couples therapy in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Long Island. She has over 30 years of experience and can understand the needs of individuals and couples across many life stages. She has training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness and EMDR Trauma Therapy.

In addition, she is highly skilled in treating Couples as a Certified Imago Therapist (CIT) through Imago Relationship International (an Institute devoted solely to Marriage and Couples Therapy). She provides a positive environment for couples and does not take sides. Couples learn to safely address their issues after learning communication techniques/strategies to effectively build a better connection and resolve issues.

Jody's therapy style is interactive, nonjudgemental and empathic. She creates an atmosphere where clients can feel free to share their concerns and actively work towards solutions. Jody's emphasis is on the client's strengths and resources. Her goal is to make clients feel valued and respected, while helping them grow.

Message to clients

I hope that therapy will be a productive and great learning experience for you, or you/ your partner. It's helpful to address issues by discussing them openly with a therapist who is caring, constructive and experienced. I strive to make this process as comfortable as possible and have a "down to earth" yet professional style. Through many years of working with clients, I am familiar with issues related to anxiety, depression, and family dynamics.

As a Couples therapist, I provide many years of experience and training. I effectively work with couples regarding issues such as infidelity, emotional distance, fighting, parenting, in-laws, step-parenting, pregnancy/ miscarriage, and communication. I teach couples how to communicate effectively so they can discuss highly personal issues in a "safe space". I serve as a positive and neutral moderator to help the relationship heal and grow.
