Professional statement

John Mallinen is a Licensed Professional Counselor located in Jenkintown, PA. With over a decade of experience, John is passionate about working with adults who have depression - especially those that have tried various treatments for depression but still feel overwhelmed with their symptoms. John’s approach builds on these clients’ previous experiences with mental health care by helping them find ways to walk through their adversity with less judgment and greater acceptance of themselves. John is also passionate about working with men, including men who feel a lack of fulfillment in their daily lives, or men who might have trouble connecting with those around them.

In sessions with a client, John will focus on building a strong therapeutic relationship, which is a core element of Gestalt and Psychoanalytic Therapies (John's primary modes of treatment). From this bond, the client will start to process through past experiences and current feelings or fears. In this approach, John supports the client in finding empowerment to make changes in their lives or relationships.

John earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Eastern University. He has an additional certificate in Gestalt Therapy from the Gestalt Therapy Institute of Philadelphia. When appropriate, John enjoys supporting clients to better understand their own spirituality and how it impacts their mental health or daily life.

Message to clients

If you're struggling with a lack of fulfillment, pervasive feelings of anxiety, depression, sadness, guilt, or fear, you may be a good candidate for therapy. Reaching out for help can be daunting, especially if you've been conditioned not to admit difficulty or hardship (as most of us have). I want you to know that I don't take lightly your decision to reach out for help, and I always aim to do my best to truly listen, hear, and understand the struggles you are facing.

If you are interested in pursing therapy with me, we will schedule an initial appointment in which you can fill me in on the concerns or difficulties you are presently facing. Near the end of that appointment, if we agree that we are a good "fit", we will schedule a second appointment in which I will obtain a detailed history of your life; occasionally obtaining a thorough history can extend into a third session. Together these sessions constitute the 'consultation phase' of therapy. My goal is at the end of these sessions to obtain a thorough understanding of who you are, and present my thoughts on what your therapy might look like.

I value my profession and my role in society as a professional counselor, and consider it a privilege to work with clients in therapy. Please feel free to reach out with any questions, or if you'd like to schedule an initial appointment.
