Professional statement

Are you burned out? Feel like others are expecting you to mess up? Feeling pressure to compromise your values to get ahead? Others have unfair expectations of you? Beating yourself up for small mistakes? Feeling like an imposter? Tired of carrying the burden of being the only person of color or LGBTQ+ person at your job? Or maybe you feel like you have to prove yourself over and over again as one of the few people who look like you in your field?

Is the stress of being the first one to “make it” in your family creating tension with your relatives? Do you feel guilty for "making it?" Does it seem like your relatives, partner, or friends don't understand how much stress you are under?

Do you have the career and title but still feel unfulfilled? Are your relationships not as you imagined they would be? Still searching for love and feel like its not being reciprocated? Does it feel like you and your partner can't get on the same page? Are you having a hard time talking about your emotions in a way that you and your partner understand?

Maybe you've spent so much time on your education and career that you now find that it's hard to recognize your own voice? Feel like you're living someone else's dream? Hard to find the right words to express what's happening in your head or body?

As a Black same gender loving male psychologist who is also the first in his family to become a doctor, I personally know the unique pressures of being a high-achieving minoritized person. I have 10+ years of experience helping Black, people of color, and LGBTQ+ people heal and thrive in their careers, relationships, and, within themselves.

Message to clients

I use a combination of culturally-informed cognitive, emotion-focused, and somatic techniques to help you (1) better understand and effectively communicate your emotions, values, and needs; (2) develop tools to cope with prejudice, discrimination, and oppression in the world and at work and (3) improve your mental health and relationships.

Combining the strengths of your culture, mindfulness, spirituality, and cognitive therapy I will guide you on a journey of getting in touch with your emotions and the trauma that lives under your skin. Together, we will process past and recent events, the emotions attached to them, and determine where those emotions live in the body. We will also examine the hidden messages about your emotions that you may have unknowingly internalized. I'll teach you how to challenge, accept, and change emotions – as appropriate – to learn new ways of being.

The relationship between a person and their therapist is a unique one. The focus is on you, but you are not alone. With me as your therapist, you will have a partner, an advocate, a co-conspirator, and a protector of the most vulnerable parts of you. Both of us are in this together. I invite you to be an active participant in this partnership. You are the expert on you. I am an expert in mental health. Let’s combine that expertise to reach your goals.
