Clients learn how to monitor their thoughts and identify the patterns that lead to unhealthy behaviors, including harmful communication with their loved ones. They also practice grounding exercises, which draws their attention to how their bodies feel and can be an excellent way to refocus away from their cravings or instincts. Dr. Kirkpatrick also encourages them to reflect on their motivation for making changes through Motivational Interviewing.
Dr. Kirkpatrick earned a Master’s degree in Counseling from West Virginia University and a PhD in Counseling with a focus in Psychology from the University of Georgia. He has nearly 50 years of experience working with clients and their families, empowering numerous clients to make major life changes to live closer to their values and to what’s important to them. He believes that all clients have innate wisdom that they can draw upon in their recovery journeys.
