Joey Sorenson is a therapist working primarily with clientele in Austin and Amarillo on issues related to anxiety, depression, career, relationships, and gay and lesbian issues. Though happy to work with a diverse range of clients, Joey specializes in helping young adults seeking renewed fulfillment in their work, love life, and mental as well as physical health. Joey’s clients are often successful professionals who find themselves stressed out or burnt out due to having put their own emotional and psychological needs on the backburner in the service of meeting and exceeding others’ expectations. Having previously been a successful software sales executive prior to his own career transition into counseling, Joey especially enjoys working with sales and marketing professionals and those working in the tech industry.
Joey has training from the Beck Institute in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), considered the gold standard treatment for depression and anxiety. Drawing upon this training, Joey collaborates with clients to identify their core values and goals as well as practical action items to facilitate alignment with them. Along the way, negative self-defeating beliefs and cognitive biases are identified and gently challenged. Sometimes, traumatic experiences or difficult memories can lead to a disconnect between a desire to pursue a goal, and the emotional or somatic reality of doing so. In such situations, Joey draws upon his training in eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) to help facilitate the client’s calming of their nervous system, enabling them to obtain clarity on the situation and a fuller understanding of what they really want.
Having worked with over 140 clients, Joey has been honored to witness remarkable change and growth on the part of those he’s helped. He has immediate availability for in-person sessions in Amarillo and telehealth appointments in Austin and throughout Texas.
