Professional statement

Dr. Joshua Tal is a clinical psychologist in New York City who specializes in insomnia and other sleep disorders, addiction and substance use concerns, as well as life transitions for older adults.

Dr. Tal’s approach is rooted in equal parts skills-based work and client-centered compassion. When working with clients who are experiencing insomnia, he utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), a highly-effective field in which he’s done extensive research. Such advanced training allows him to work with clients to identify what stressors and situations might be contributing towards sleep concerns, and create customized plans to return to restful, restorative sleep. Each personalized plans often entails a combination of empowering techniques, such as behavioral experiments, light therapy and 'sleep bootcamp', as well as an accurate diagnosis of what's going on.

When working with clients who are concerned about substance use, Dr. Tal utilizes an abstinence within harm-reduction approach. He often incorporates motivational interviewing, mindfulness based techniques, as well as practice active self-compassion to address self-criticism and improve self-soothing abilities.

Dr. Tal is committed to tangible, effective progress for each of his clients, and treatment is often short-term – sometimes as few as two to three sessions.

Message to clients

I'm a caring and direct psychologist with a speciality in sleep disorders. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) to help you to get the sleep your body needs. CBT-I is a rapid and effective treatment. In fact, 85% of CBT-I clients will increase their sleep by at least 1 hour with as little as 4-8 sessions. Stop letting your worries or your medications dictate your sleep. Let's work together so you can reclaim ownership of your sleep.

I also offer treatments for the issues underlying sleep disturbance including depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction and other mind/body health challenges. I use compassion and support to help you understand your problems, and I provide concrete coping skills and evidence based tools to help you manage these problems outside of sessions.
