Professional statement

Dr. Joy Von Steiger is a Clinical Psychologist in Cambridge, MA and the Director of the Brandeis Counseling Center in Waltham, MA. She is an expert in college counseling and multicultural counseling and does lots of work around an individual’s identity, especially in times of transition and trauma. Many of her clients are college and graduate students or adults in their 40s and 50s. She especially enjoys working with individuals who are of marginalized identities or those who devote their lives to social justice work and are looking for affordable therapy. She also has experience working with adults who have depression and/or anxiety.

Dr. Von Steiger utilizes insight-oriented therapies, including Family Systems and Relational Therapy. Through her work at Brandeis and the Transformational Prison Project, Dr. Von Steiger has a deep understanding of how an individual’s identity and past experiences influence the way they interact with world. Her sessions are client-led, and she takes the time to understand the ways in which they want to grow. Most of her work is trauma informed, and she is cognizant of any traumas an individual is bringing into the room—whether it occurred during childhood or is connected to one’s race and/or immigration experience.

Dr. Von Steiger has developed a safe, nonjudgmental space where clients feel seen and heard. She moves at a pace that is comfortable for the individual sitting across from her and believes that everyone’s journey towards healing is unique. Her office is conveniently located near Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Message to clients

I have been in private practice in the Boston/Cambridge area for 30 years working with adults and adolescents, couples and families. I work with clients utilizing a trauma informed lens as well as elements of liberation psychology and relational cultural theory. I feel all clinical work must begin with a thorough understanding of a client's multiple identities and how those identities interact within their communities and the larger culture. My work and my passion are embedded in a deep commitment to social justice.
