Professional statement

Juliane Kowski is a certified analytical music therapist, and a licensed creative arts therapist (NY). She works with children, teens and adults in person and online. For 23 years, she has helped people who struggle with anxiety and/or depression due to trauma, learning challenges, peer pressures and/or family dynamics.  Her work includes a close collaboration with parents or caregivers. Juliane works with clients from NY online.

Ms. Kowski uses a variety of conventional and exotic instruments, as well as the voice in musical improvisation to access buried emotions and experiences directly and effectively.  The goal is to create an empathic relationship with the potential for reparative experiences and an increase in coping skills. All children are born with the gifts of spontaneity and creativity. To meet them in their world of imagination and using their own language of play, music and art is a direct path to health.

For adults, music therapy might provide a richer and more intuitive experience with which to explore anxiety and/or depression.  They often are drawn to music therapy after having found conventional talk therapy limited in being able to access their emotions in depth.

Ms. Kowksi’s skills as a jazz singer and voice coach give her a unique understanding of how powerful music can be in helping people discover their own voices…musical, spiritual, emotional, intellectual. It is a creative and joyful medium, serving as a motivator to engage in therapy.  Clients do not have to be able to play an instrument but the process invites them to be curious and playful in using music to explore their inner lives.   Ms. Kowski creates a therapeutic environment that is peaceful, calm, nurturing, playful, safe; and alive with music in all of its facets to guide clients towards health and well-being.

Message to clients

I am holding a space of serenity, playfulness, and creativity for my clients as we discover the causes and depths of their feelings, pain, confusions, but also their resiliency. I expose clients to a variety of percussion instruments, sound making devices and harmonic instruments in order to play together. Using sounds, breath and the body allow my clients to intimately connect, and to trust.  Together we explore new perspectives in coping with and changing their anxieties, self-doubts or whatever roadblocks are standing in their path.

I mostly see clients in my studio in Berkeley, as it is equipped with many instruments, toys and art materials. I also serve clients who want to receive music therapy but have limited options where they live, online, in NY and other states.

My years of experience have taught me that people who choose music therapy are curious, open-minded and eager to join me on this musical road less traveled.
