Professional statement

Dr. Julie Schnur is a licensed clinical psychologist who provides teletherapy to clients throughout New York and New Jersey. Her primary expertise is working with women with breast cancer. She works to help women cope with the stresses associated with learning of breast cancer risk, adjusting to diagnosis, navigating treatment and its side-effects, and transitioning to survivorship and beyond. Dr. Schnur's goal at each and every step is to help patients feel heard, supported, and provided with clear tools and skills to manage cancer-related stress, promote wellness, and improve overall quality of life.

Dr. Schnur takes a warm, down to earth, integrative approach to treatment, and works with her clients to develop a personalized plan that suits their needs, lifestyle, and availability. She incorporates evidence-based therapy techniques including Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), supportive psychotherapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and hypnosis for stress and symptom management. She has over 15 years experience in the breast cancer setting, which means that clients can jump right into talking about their experiences without having to take valuable time explaining things like medical terminology, common side effects, common patients experiences and worries, etc. This unique experience also means that she's able to comfortably hold the space for you to talk about all the thoughts friends and family might have a hard time hearing.

Dr. Schnur is also passionate about supporting oncology providers, including oncology residents, fellows, and oncologists. She has experience helping them navigate burnout, improve communication skills, make decisions about work-life balance, prioritize stress management and wellness, and cope with the emotions associated with working in cancer care.

Message to clients

Welcome! I wanted to begin by saying I'm so glad that you've taken the time, and created the space in your day, to search for support. Searching for a therapist who's the right fit is a huge first step, so congratulations. My expertise and experience are focused on women with breast cancer, including previvors, those in active treatment, survivors, metavivors, and anyone at any point in between. My goal is to help you manage the stresses and side-effects of treatment, and to create a space where you can just be - without having to put on a "good patient," "brave warrior," or "had a life-changing epiphany" face.

My approach is warm, down to earth, and practical, with a good dash of humor mixed in. I incorporate cognitive-behavioral/rational-emotive behavioral therapy techniques and psychodynamic approaches, with support, listening, and practical problem-solving strategies. For those interested, I can offer hypnosis to help with side-effect management or procedure-related stress. And one strength that sets me apart from other therapists is that you can jump right into talking about things like flap surgery or tissue expanders without needing to explain to your therapist what they are.

On the other side of the cancer care equation, I'm also passionate about working with oncology provider. If you’re interested in learning more, please message me to schedule a free 15-minute consultation.
