Professional statement

Karen Corona is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in private practice based in Portland, Oregon. She specializes in providing trauma therapy to women in order to heal and restore emotional well-being. She is specifically dedicated to helping women release ‘emotional burdens’ related to the effects of childhood trauma in the form of emotional abuse or neglect and family of origin dysfunction.

The clients she works with often have developed strategies to distance from emotional pain through self-medicating with alcohol or food. Some of the common issues include: anxiety, perfectionism, control, people-pleasing, an active inner critic, problems regulating emotions, ‘mood swings’, shame, feeling ‘emotionally flooded’ when triggered, and shut down states associated with depression.

Karen integrates Expressive Arts Therapy (EXA) and Internal Family Systems (IFS) as her central approach to treat trauma. With expressive arts therapy, she uses writing/journaling, visual arts, and music for therapeutic purposes. Internal Family Systems is an evidence-based treatment for trauma resolution. In the healing process, emotional burdens may be released along with faulty beliefs about oneself that perpetuate inner turmoil and pain. There is a newfound inner freedom.

Her therapeutic style is one of warmth, compassion, creativity, and deep respect for the individual on a healing journey. She incorporates both insight-based interventions as well as offering practical tools in her work with clients. She values the therapeutic relationship as being an important catalyst for healing and change. Creating a safe space for one to explore and communicate thoughts and feelings is of utmost importance to her.

She offers both in-person sessions at her Portland office location and online sessions to individuals residing in both Oregon (OR) and California (CA) where she is currently licensed as a therapist.

Message to clients

Do you long to create a ‘life you love’ but past traumas and emotional burdens are keeping you stuck and trapped, not knowing how to move forward? Are your primary relationships impacted in negative ways due to unhealed ‘wounds’ to your soul?

If you can relate to these issues and feel defeated in the process of ‘trying to do things differently’, then I want to extend some hope to you today that it is possible to heal and make the desired changes in your life. Through my therapeutic process you may experience more inner freedom to be your authentic self and pursue your goals and dreams. The healing affords the opportunity to thrive in life.

In my work with clients, I guide one to explore the various ways one’s ‘inner system’ is constellated and the types of protective strategies that developed to be able to function. These protective strategies often show up as symptoms or unwanted behaviors and patterns. As there is healing of core parts of oneself that have been ‘exiled’, the need for protective strategies can lessen their grip. This is an ‘unburdening’ process where faulty beliefs about oneself and ways of relating to self and others are transformed.

If this message resonated to you, I welcome you to schedule an initial phone consultation to determine if we might be a ‘good fit’ to work together. Take the next step to invest in You.

Therapy Groups

Karen Michelle Corona
The Art of Wellness

This is a creative arts wellness group for women. There is a theme and then an arts-based invitation to engage in during the group. I am trained in Expressive Arts Therapy and as a SoulCollage® Facilitator and I integrate both into the group work.
