Professional statement

Kate Hoover is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Brooklyn specializing in individual counseling, identity exploration, life transitions, and relationships. She uses a collaborative, nonjudgmental, and gentle therapeutic approach to support clients in expressing and connecting to their unique sense of meaning and authenticity.

Kate will listen carefully with you to your experience to identify patterns that are working and places that feel stuck. She will explore with you how your relationships, experiences, and cultural contexts shape your beliefs about yourself and your ability to meet your needs. Kate also uses mindfulness to help increase awareness and practice new ways of responding to yourself and to others.

Kate has studied psychodynamic, somatic, mindfulness, and trauma-informed approaches; she also has training in working with boundaries. In addition, Kate’s education includes considering the impact of one’s current or former (and possibly complicated) relationship to spirituality and religion (when it applies). She previously worked in hospital settings, university counseling centers, and a somatic therapy group practice.

Message to clients

Often, clients have thought a lot about how to understand or solve what troubles them before we meet but feel unresolved despite their efforts. In my experience, the opportunity to reflect in sessions can yield a wealth of information about oneself that might not be as available at the fast pace of day-to-day thinking. When we slow down, we discover split-second belief patterns and responses which shape what might otherwise seem like confusing or “illogical” behavior and symptoms. By themselves, these kinds of insights can bring relief; when coupled with practices that help regain and maintain emotional equilibrium, I have seen clients feel empowered to skillfully deal with both past and present trauma and stress.

As someone who has explored a number of different paths, I have respect and compassion for people in moments of transition, uncertainty, and seeking. I am committed to an anti-oppressive, inclusive approach that welcomes all experiences.
