Professional statement

Kathleen Silver is a psychotherapist in Summit, NJ, working with individuals of all ages and stages, as well as couples. She specializes in anxiety, depression, life transitions, trauma, and relationship concerns.

In her work with couples, Kathleen uses the Gottman Method to help couples clarify unhealthy relationship habits and develop new ways to communicate and reconnect. Trust, commitment and friendship are central to any healthy partnership, and through couples work, can be rebuilt and nurtured.

Drawing on various techniques and principles, including psychodynamics, IFS, DBT and Gottman theory, Kathleen helps clients and couples explore the connections between their thoughts, feelings and behaviors.

With insight on these connections, in an environment that feels secure and supportive, clients are able to make changes that reduce anxiety and/or depression, increase their sense of productivity, and create healthier connections with people in their lives.

Kathleen received her BA from Georgetown University and her MSW from NYU Silver School of Social Work. She is currently enrolled in training in the Internal Family Systems (IFS) approach.

Message to clients

I believe we are all made for connection... connection with others and connection with ourselves!

Life brings so many changes and transitions, some of which can leave us feeling overwhelmed, drained, frustrated and uncertain about how to make things better.

I strive to create a safe and comfortable space where you feel heard and understood. My style is warm, compassionate and non-judgmental. I listen attentively and work collaboratively with my clients, seeking to understand their experiences and tailor therapy to their unique needs and goals.

In my work with couples, I help them identify the issues and communication habits leading to feelings of distance and resentment. Many of the couples I work with find their challenges are more easily explored and repaired with an impartial “third party,” who can offer a new perspective. Trust and commitment CAN be rebuilt and nurtured, when two people are committed to therapy.

I have always been deeply curious about people, their struggles, and how to help them feel more grounded, fulfilled, and engaged in their lives. I welcome the opportunity to meet you and explore this process with you!
