Professional statement

Kelli Fitzgerald is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the Lake View neighborhood of Chicago. Her practice provides psychotherapy to adults seeking supportive individual counseling. She has experience with anxiety, depression, religion and spirituality, performance stress, and attachment issues. Her practice is open to individuals of all religious and cultural backgrounds.

Kelli believes that meaningful work can be achieved in months rather than years, without sacrificing depth. Her practice is driven by a passionate pursuit of emerging methods that leverage hard research toward positive outcomes. Enduring transformational change is more predictable now than at any time in recent history and the way forward can begin at session one.

She received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and her Master’s of Social Work from the Smith College, School of Social Work. Her office is conveniently located a few blocks from the Belmont stop via the Brown, Purple and Red lines.

Message to clients

In therapy, positive outcomes are highly associated with the relationship between client and therapist. When this collaboration is sturdy- it becomes a tool in and of itself. Even in short term work, there is so much that is possible!

Therapy sessions aim to create an experience that is different and positive. I help clients have new experiences of core emotions in need of transformation. We work together to cultivate empathic and lovingly attuned responses to that affect. Responding differently to what needs healing and attention is what leads to transformation. It could come through subtle shifts that steadily accrue to a positive re-working of old patterns or a series of profound moments of release and renewal. The emergence of even the smallest new responses to distress are an opportunity to facilitate plasticity. Transformational studies have expanded the therapeutic lens to include, at times privilege the new, good or unexpected. For many people these small details are already there but elude conscious observation. For other clients session work creates a warm and generative environment sturdy enough for anything that needs to break through.

Even as our biology skews toward an evolutionary negativity bias it also holds this wellspring of resource.

To draw from this wellspring is the therapeutic task. I love my work!
