Professional statement

Kendra Capalbo is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker and expert couples counselor. Kendra offers the convenience of online sessions to couples throughout Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Kendra's utilizes a combination of the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy. Her intake process includes an extensive assessment of a couple’s social history together, the history of their relationship, and their individual histories, which allows Kendra to get to the root of the relationship challenges. She uses this questionnaire, along with three therapy sessions (one as a couple and one with each partner) plus one feedback session, to develop an individualized treatment plan, which includes helping her clients learn how to deal with recurring conflicts in a healthy way.

Kendra offers a powerful and custom-tailored approach to disarm conflicting verbal communication, increase intimacy, respect, and affection, identify and break harmful relational cycles and create a better sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship.

Kendra is certified as a Neurodiverse couples therapist and as such helps couples learn how the disparities in the way they process the world impacts their relationship and how to overcome those obstacles and identify the strengths that exist in their differences.

Kendra is passionate about couples counseling and believes all of her clients deserve to be in healthy, loving relationships. She looks forward to meeting you and helping you find your way back to each other.

Message to clients

I have designed my practice to reflect more of a concierge model. What this means is that I take on fewer clients, thus allowing me to offer you more availability, flexibility and accessibility. This allows me to extend sessions when needed at no additional cost and schedule last minute appointments if you hit a bump in the road and need additional support. I also offer extremely flexible hours including early morning, late night and weekend appointments - I work around YOUR schedule.

Born of a true love for couples work, I have made it the focus of my practice. You can rest assured that I have the necessary training needed to do this work well and that I am always building on that foundation.

It is important to me that I set couples up for success and that means only working with couples who meet the criteria that seems to be a good fit with my style. I offer a complimentary consultation to determine this. If I feel we would work well together, I will offer you an invitation to move forward and then the two of you will decide privately if you feel I am the clinician you feel comfortable enough with to invite into the most intimate part of your lives. If you do, we will begin the work.

I recognize how much of an honor it is to do this work and hope we can do it together.

Therapist's note

Clients have had success using HSA / FSA cards as a form of payment. Other than in cases where one partner has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, the way I code makes it unlikely that you will be reimbursed. If you want to check with your insurance company in advance, you will want to ask if they reimburse for treatment code 90847 (Family psychotherapy, conjoint psychotherapy with patient present) and diagnosis code Z63.0 (Problems in Relationship with Spouse or Partner). I am happy to explain my reasons for coding this way if you have any questions. If there is an ASD diagnosis, please contact me for more information as there is a greater chance that you will be at least partially reimbursed.

Client testimonials

"In short, I can't recommend Kendra enough and she's improved my marriage and myself in more ways than I ever thought possible. Kendra is incredibly professional, compassionate, and intuitive. I've been seeing her with my husband for over a year now, and we want to keep Kendra as a part of our life as long as possible. We'd been together for about 9 years (married for 5) when we decided to seek some support. Personally, we were seeking better ways to communicate with each other, and didn't understand how sometimes (despite our best intentions) we ended up missing the mark (offending each other, going to bed angry or confused). We've learned the tools to reframe how we think about communication and our relationship, and also so much more. Kendra is a strong couples therapist, not only for her incredible knowledge and experience in the subject, but also her ability to mold the sessions depending on what needs attention. We've worked through various crises together (personal, professional, and existential), and more mundane disagreements about chores. Big and small, Kendra is truly talented at working any issues we've had. Couples therapy is really hard. It's hard (for me at least) to admit and ask for help. Sometimes, I feel emotionally drained after a session. But I know the support and therapy Kendra has provided has made my life and my relationship better. Every session, I feel like I become a better person and that is truly priceless. We consistently say it's the best thing we've ever done."

"Kendra Calapbo has been instrumental in helping me increase peace and happiness in my life and achieve a greater sense of self-worth. She has amazing insight, empathy, and is perhaps the most non-judgmental person I have ever met. Just being around her is a calming and positive experience. On the other hand, she doesn’t sugar coat things. She will not tell you what you want to hear but rather what you need to hear. Kendra is especially good with relationship advice. My relationship with my spouse is so improved compared to where we were at when I first started seeing Kendra. My spouse agrees 100% that Kendra has had a very positive effect on us as a couple. I have been to several therapists and none came close to Kendra’s beneficial impact on my life."
