Professional statement

Kristen Antonio is a licensed clinical mental health counselor in Newton, MA, where she welcomes adolescents and young adults who are seeking to better understand the patterned thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are holding them back from feeling fulfilled and satisfied in this stage of life. Many of Kristen’s clients come to address symptoms related to perfectionism, motivation, self-criticism, anxiety, and depression that may be accompanying a life transition.

Kristen's clients are often insight-oriented individuals with highly emotional sensitivity that may sometimes become overwhelming, scary, or confusing. She works with her clients to explore these emotions through the use of various therapeutic modalities, including cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and holistic approaches such as mindfulness. Her style is relational, curious, active, and engaged. From the foundation of the non-judgmental therapeutic relationship, Kristen encourages clients to become curious about how thought patterns and coping behaviors have developed and what may need to shift in order for clients to make choices that are more aligned with their unique set of values and goals.

Having worked in schools and educational settings prior to private practice, Kristen is uniquely skilled in working with adolescents, young adults, and their families. If clinically appropriate, Kristen will provide parent consultations and/or family meetings for clients who are working on building communication skills and/or foster deeper relationships within the family system.

Kristen is deeply committed to maintaining an inclusive practice that centers the voices and experiences of her clients. She actively works towards resisting pathologizing or diagnosing behavior that may stem from systemic oppression and utilizes a social justice lens to help clients combat symptoms of internalized and externalized oppression.

In addition to the Newton office, Kristen offers the flexibility of remote therapy sessions and welcomes new clients to her online practice, as well.

Message to clients

Something feels “off” or maybe a little broken. Problems you once were able to solve with ease, now feel insurmountable. Friendships, relationships, and hobbies that used to bring you joy, now have less meaning. Your mind is scattered and the negative thoughts that tell you “you’re worthless,” are getting louder. You feel yourself slipping but you’re too tired, lonely, or scared to move. Or perhaps you’re moving too much; trying to keep busy to stay in front of the discomfort or resist confronting a painful experience. In spite of all that, you are here, reading this, which tells me you are resilient and ready to make a shift.

Facing your mental health challenges automatically makes you one of the bravest people I know. It takes tremendous courage to show up in therapy and do the work; peel back protective layers you have built over the years to cope with your pain. When we weed out the old habits that no longer serve us, we make space for something more beautiful to bloom.

Successful therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Together, we will create a customized plan that integrates various modalities to support you in achieving wellness.
