Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSWShe/Her/Hers
Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSWLaura Van Wyk treats individuals and couples who are 18+ years old. She has experience working with non-binary individuals as well as gender fluid humans. She also treats many individuals, couples, and polycules within the CIS and LGBTQI+ communities.
Laura is certified in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). She also uses psychodynamic and psychoanalytic approaches in her treatment. Laura is EMDRIA certified in EMDR and will receive her AASECT certification at the end of 2022. Laura believes that the best type of treatment for her clients is an integrated approach, using the best tools of each of these therapies to address the issues that her clients have identified as their treatment goals.
Laura very much works from a strengths-based perspective. All clients come to therapy with an enormous capacity to change and motivation to do so. Building on the strengths they have used in the past to accomplish goals in their life, Laura helps clients also utilize them to accomplish their treatment goals in therapy. She uses a combination of the therapies that she is trained in (including CBT, DBT, EMDR, ACT, and sex therapy) to work with clients to reach their articulated therapy goals.
Laura stands with the AASECT position that sex addiction does not exists, however she does work with individuals who do not feel as if sex is being used in a positive or neutral way in their lives to develop a healthier relationship with sex.
Laura’s professional history includes being an LCSW who holds a master’s in social work from New York University. She has been seeing clients privately for the past three years and also has over ten years of experience working clinically with clients in forensic settings with diagnoses ranging from schizophrenia to adjustment disorders to personality disorders.
