Professional statement

Laura Van Wyk treats individuals, couples, and polycules. She has experience working with non-binary individuals as well as gender fluid humans. She also treats many individuals, couples, and polycules within the CIS and LGBTQI+ communities.

Laura is certified in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). She also uses psychodynamic and psychoanalytic approaches in her treatment. Laura is EMDRIA certified in EMDR. Laura is a sex and kink positive therapist who is AASECT Certified. She believes that the best type of treatment for her clients is an integrated approach, using the best tools of each of these therapies to address the issues that her clients have identified as their treatment goals.

Laura very much works from a strengths-based perspective. All humans have an enormous capacity to change their lives and she is interested in working with humans who are motivated to do so. Building on the strengths clients have used in the past to accomplish goals in their lives, Laura helps clients also utilize them to accomplish their treatment goals in therapy. She uses a combination of the therapies that she is trained in (including CBT, DBT, EMDR, ACT, and sex therapy) to work with clients to reach their articulated therapy goals.

Laura stands with the AASECT position that sex addiction does not exists, however she does work with individuals who do not feel as if sex is being used in a positive or enhancing way to develop the relationship they would like with sex.

Laura’s professional history includes being an LCSW who holds a master’s in social work from New York University. She has been seeing clients privately for the past four years and has over 15 years of experience working clinically with clients in forensic settings, outpatient mental health community centers and clinics.

Message to clients

Deciding to enter into therapy can be one of the most difficult steps that many people make but with the right therapist it can also be one of the most rewarding and best decisions that clients often report that they have ever made. Investing time developing insight into your feelings, relationships, and behavior patterns can be transformative.

I believe that finding a therapist that creates an environment where you can accomplish these achievements in a safe and non-judgemental space is vital. The rapport and alliance that you develop with your therapist is equally as important and your trust in them in truly a gift that you offer them each week that you enter into their office for a session.

My goal is to provide a queer affirming, gender affirming, and kink affirming safe and intimate space for you to explore your inner world and bring you closer to living your most authentic life. I strive to bring my most authentic self to each session allowing for an individualized, collaborative approach to treatment with a core belief that you are the expert in your own life.
