Professional statement

Dr. Manuel Manotas is a psychologist based in San Francisco who offers teletherapy sessions in both English and Spanish to clients throughout the state of California. Dr. Manotas’s clients often experience negative spiraling thoughts, such as “I’m never going to be good enough,” “once I have enough money, I’ll be happier,” or “no one likes me because I’m not perfect.” Dr. Manotas addresses these cognitive distortions head-on, teaching his clients anxiety-relieving physical practices while exploring the origins of this damaging self-talk.  Dr. Manotas’s therapeutic techniques turn clients away from shame, encouraging them to find strength in vulnerability.

Somatic psychotherapy, a specialty and passion for Dr. Manotas, is an evidence-based practice that urges the client to link their emotions to their physical body. By not only treating the mind but also bringing attention to the body’s reaction to emotion, Dr. Manotas draws the connection between our feelings and how our bodies carry these feelings. He teaches regulating exercises to refocus the body’s energy such as deep breathing and visualization.

Dr. Manotas received his PsyD from California Institute of Integral Studies and has a certification from the Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute. His credentials and experience makes him particularly effective at working with those who want to overcome anxiety or heal from trauma.

Message to clients

Maybe it's time to stop trying to think our way out of anxiety. “If I do this, I'll be ok,” or “Once I accomplish that and that other thing happens, then I’ll finally be ok."

Does it work? No it doesn't. It might give us a brief sense of relief that gets quickly replaced by the next wave of anxiety. Yet for some strange reason we keep practicing mental gymnastics in a futile attempt to calm the mind, only agitating it more. It's like we keep banging our heads agains a wall in an attempt to get rid of a headache. Are you ready to try something that works? Then let me tell you about how I work.

Besides utilizing the tools of traditional therapy (looking at the past for understanding the problem and shifting our negative thinking patterns), I use cutting edge body based techniques to help you reduce anxiety and feel better. These techniques bypass the thinking mind and address directly the source of anxiety in the body.

Trauma - Coping and healing after threatening or scary events, such as witnessing accidents or experiencing sexual, verbal, emotional, or physical abuse

Anxiety - Coping with excessive worry, nervousness, or stress; intense discomfort in social settings (social anxiety); sudden and intense feelings of panic (panic disorder)

Mindfulness - Developing practices to encourage a state of active, open attention on the present

Existential crisis - Supportive exploration of meaning and purpose in one’s life; finding one’s path in the face of existential anxiety, dread, and feelings of meaninglessness

Somatic - Using the wisdom of the body to work with traumatic material.
