Professional statement

Dr. Marc Kossmann is a Clinical Psychologist dedicated to helping individuals achieve self-understanding and lead meaningful lives. Raised in a multicultural and bilingual family with Italian as the primary language, his early fascination with the human mind was influenced by his father's World War II experiences, shaping his understanding of trauma and resilience.

Initially pursuing a pre-law path at New York University, Dr. Kossmann's growing interest in psychology led him to shift focus, eventually earning a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) from Widener University’s Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology. He is heavily influenced by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) within a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) framework, while also considering the larger psychodynamic context of a client's life. He collaborates with clients, recognizing them as experts in their own lives, and with over 30 years of clinical experience, he ensures treatment is a joint effort.

Dr. Kossmann finds fulfillment in promoting self-understanding and personal growth, always prioritizing client well-being. Besides direct clinical work, he has held clinical management roles, overseeing a team of about 250 doctoral-level clinical psychologists nationwide. He values case consultation and supervision, which allow him to multiply his impact in the field.

His therapeutic approach is enriched by early exposure to Eastern philosophy and mindfulness practices. Martial arts training introduced him to mindfulness meditation, and retreats with teachers like Thich Nhat Hanh and Jon Kabat-Zinn have reinforced his belief in mindfulness and holistic well-being.

Outside his professional life, Dr. Kossmann is an adventurous spirit with a deep connection to nature. He is an avid backpacker, having climbed half of the Adirondack High Peaks, and enjoys kayaking, canoeing, motorcycling, bicycling, and traveling. His love for the outdoors is further expressed through building his own kayaks and canoes.

Message to clients

I'm a clinical psychologist with over 30 years of experience working with all types of situations. Life is hard, and anxiety, depression, stress, and trauma end up touching just about everybody. My focus is on helping my clients maximize their ability to adapt to what life is throwing at them. Think of a surfer on the ocean. You have no control over the waves. But with balance and constant adaptation, you can ride those waves without getting hurt.

Along with years of clinical training, I have years of experience with mindfulness meditation and Buddhist psychology. My approach blends Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy, and a whole lot of practical common sense.

I want you to feel value, purpose, and meaning from what you're doing in your life. I want you to unlock your full potential for a fulfilling and meaningful life. We work together as partners to achieve that. Let's find a time to meet and talk about your situation. It's a free, no obligation talk. So go ahead and book a time that works for you.
