Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW-RShe/Her/Hers
Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW-RMarnie Waxman is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker located in Brooklyn, NY. Marnie specializes in helping individuals whose past experiences of trauma or abuse impact their ability to live comfortably. Her clients suffer from anxiety or depression that leaves them feeling empty or unfulfilled, despite multiple attempts at making changes in their lives. She has extensive experience working with those who have past sexual trauma, as well as those within the LGBTQIA population. Her goal with clients is to help them establish an identity that feels authentic to who they are and to reduce the impact of shame, stress, or insecurity.
Marnie’s approach to therapy is somatic and relational. Marnie believes that trauma and stress impact the body, so paying attention to physical health is beneficial for overall wellbeing. Marnie encourages clients to assess where tension or stress lives in their bodies, whether that’s in the face, shoulders, or hands. Using the understanding developed from this awareness, clients begin to address their physical reactions to stress or painful memories. Marnie teaches them relaxation and grounding techniques that can reduce these reactions. Marnie also teaches clients about attachment theory and other relational psychological concepts so they can gain a better understanding of how their early relationships form the ways that they connect with others in the present. Marnie also uses a therapy modality called Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy to help clients move past their trauma or distress. Combined, these therapy modalities help clients understand and affirm their identities.
Marnie earned a Master’s degree in Social Work from Hunter School of Social Work. She has over twenty years of experience working with clients from various settings. She enjoys building a strong trusting therapeutic relationship with her clients, from which comes empathy, compassion, and gentle guidance.
