Dr. Mary Gallagher is a psychologist in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn specializing in anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), trauma, mindfulness, and compulsive behaviors. She received pre-doctoral training at the Montefiore Medical Center and went on to receive her Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology from Yeshiva University’s Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology. She is a skilled clinician, highly competent in providing individual, family, and group therapy teenagers, young adults, and adults.
Having received specialized training in both focus areas, Dr. Gallagher’s area of expertise lies in supporting individuals with OCD and trauma. For clients with OCD, she takes an evidence-based approach using exposure response therapy, gently guiding individuals to be exposed to their fear or compulsive ritual in a very structured way. For clients with trauma, she uses prolonged exposure or cognitive processing therapy and draws upon dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) and works with each individual to build coping skills, unique to each person’s symptoms. At the heart of her practice is a focus on helping clients, particularly those with anxiety or depression, with emotion regulation by helping them build skills to identify and change how they feel.
Dr. Gallagher has a special interest in working in working with teenagers and young adults. She approaches treatment with compassion and empathy, creating an atmosphere that is validating and change-oriented.
Anxiety - Generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic attacks, phobias
Depression - Sleep and energy disruption, overall mood disturbance, inability to enjoy yourself, and difficulty being motivated, amongst many other symptoms
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) - Using exposure and response prevention to help clients confront OCD, e.g. concern with and/or fear of germs and becoming 'contaminated'
Trauma - Including dealing with past sexual assault, childhood trauma, environmental trauma (e.g. witnessing/experiencing violence), PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
Mindfulness - Focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations
