Professional statement

Mary comes to Intention Path Counseling from 8 years in doctors' offices. There, she gained valuable experience working with many different types of people and with primary care providers and psychiatrists, helping to elevate physical and mental wellness, with and without mental health medications. Helping folks find an effective antidepressant without side effects was a typical part of the job. A diverse, fast-paced environment left her skilled in crisis management, psychotherapy, coaching and case management. She aims to provide any and all of these services through her new private practice.

Mental wellness through Intention Path Counseling looks like increasing foundational knowledge to be able to drop the unhelpful ways that we tend to view what's going on in our minds. Understanding your perspective of your past experiences, which shape how you feel and perceive the world, is essential as well. Knowing that trauma can be defined as a negative life experience during which we feel helpless sets the stage for approaches that are effective and practical. Mary is well versed in providing education around thoughts, emotions and behaviors and helping folks change thoughts and behaviors. However, usually, more is required to get us the clarity we desire to move into taking effective action.

Mary is particularly experienced helping people who struggle with chronic illness, which can be related to past trauma. She is useful to those honoring the mind-body connection, regardless of illness state. She desires to help everyone heal from trauma. She is passionate about working with young adults and the LGBTQIA2S+ community and can be very useful to parents, caregivers and partners of those battling addiction. She regularly sees clients with PMDD as well.

Message to clients

I was probably sitting in my office nook during a telehealth session when a client asked me if I thought CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) was gaslighting yourself. I don't think that's exactly true, but it really made me stop and think. It is essential to understand thoughts, feelings and behaviors, what they are and how they all work together. I also think we can move beyond that.

I started looking into more effective approaches when having a client make a list of all fearful circumstances and asking her to slowly expose herself to them did not help very much. That list was never going to be comprehensive enough, and she was actually scared of her fear. This, combined with a global pandemic, sent me looking for more information.

I think that may be one of the most important things for you to know about me--I am going to show up humble but aiming to be as effective as possible. I am a life-long learner and think outside of the box. I take your mental wellness very seriously and am going to make my best effort to help you in a way that works for you. I am always hungry for knowledge and effective approaches but also respect your values, connection to yourself and goals and objectives that you have communicated for our work together. I hope to provide the best of both worlds.
