Professional statement

Mary Linkous is a Licensed Professional Counselor located in Gordonsville, TN. Mary specializes in providing clients with the support they need in times of major change. This could be a divorce, becoming empty-nesters, starting a new job, transitioning to a new career path, graduating from school, and more. She provides clients with the introspective space they need to process through what this change means for them and to address the anxieties that come with that change.

Mary’s approach to therapy draws from evidence-based therapy modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based therapy. She is a person-centered therapist who gives clients the practical skills they need to overcome their stress. She is trained in providing trauma-informed care, as many clients who have experienced traumatic events need specialized support, especially in the face of major transitions.

Mary earned her Master’s degree from Argosy University. She has over ten years of experience working with individuals, couples, and families in the clinical setting. She creates a laid-back, personable environment where clients can explore their thoughts and feelings. She also works with young people as they begin their careers and need guidance on how to do so meaningfully.

Message to clients

Whether you have had therapy before or not, you likely have some questions about what it is like. The most asked question I get before a client starts therapy is, "How does this work?" I can definitely appreciate that. Don't we all want to know how things are going to go before we consider if it is something you want to do? I don’t believe that therapy is “one size fits all,” so I focus on ensuring that each session fits my clients’ individual needs. I am dedicated to a person-centered approach, so our process depends largely on your situation. I will listen to what you would like help with and together we’ll decide on an approach that works.

So, what should you expect if you decide to move forward with me as your therapist? First, I will send you an intake questionnaire and some routine initial paperwork. During our first session (intake session), I will review the intake questionnaire with you and get more information on your history, concerns and current needs. This session allows for us to get to know each other and build trust. I know that starting therapy can be intimidating and emotional, so I strive to put my clients at ease using humor and understanding in a non-judgmental atmosphere. After the initial discomfort wears off, many clients begin looking forward to our sessions as a time to discuss their feelings and issues in a safe environment.
