Professional statement

Matt McDavid, a Columbia University-trained therapist, helps people looking to grow unlock the change they've been searching for -- empowering them to live a more authentic and fulfilling life.

Matt practices trauma-informed care that encourages clients to shift their focus from "What’s wrong with me?" to "What happened to me?" This distinction builds upon the resilience inherent in all individuals—fostering self-compassion and pride while releasing misplaced shame and blame.

Matt's strength-based approach to therapy encourages acceptance of all emotions, particularly those that feel uncomfortable. There are no 'bad' feelings. Every emotion serves a purpose, aiming to protect or inform us in some way. By reframing so-called negative emotions as allies rather than enemies, we can welcome them with curiosity rather than resistance. This process fosters a stronger connection to oneself, making it possible to find joy even in difficult moments. Through these steps, clients not only confront their challenges but also rediscover their strength and capacity for happiness.

Matt's private practice, McDavid Creative Therapy, is a safe and inclusive space that celebrates diversity in all its beautiful forms. Matt honors and respects the unique experiences, responses, and worldviews of each individual, acknowledging their validity and importance. Yet regardless of individual differences, one thing remains true: adversity can always be catalyst for transformation and growth.

Matt’s work with his clients extends beyond alleviating painful symptoms. He is committed to empowering clients as they cultivate self-compassion, emotional resilience, and self-love—ultimately guiding each individual toward a life of profound inner peace and fulfillment.

Now, it’s your turn.

Message to clients

For me, being a therapist is more than a job—it's a calling. As a young adult, my own challenges led to profound personal growth through the healing and transformative power of therapy. That experience gave me the utmost respect and empathy for individuals facing mental health hurdles, and I became committed to supporting others on their journey toward a better life.

I believe the journey is less about changing yourself and more about letting go of what isn’t true to who you are, unlearning how you’ve been conditioned to see yourself, and recognizing that you’ve been good enough all along. Your story doesn’t have to be ghostwritten by what happened to you. You can become the conscious author of your own life.

Moments of breakdown are opportunities for breakthroughs. Like light shining through the cracks of a vessel, our experiences of adversity can lead to profound growth and resilience. We can embrace the journey of healing and transformation, finding strength and beauty in the very places where we once felt broken.

Our work together can show you how.
