Professional statement

Matthew Porter is a Psychotherapist in Beverly Hills. He works with individuals, couples, adolescents & families. Many of Matthew’s clients come in to address anxiety, trauma, addictions, relationships and self-growth. Matthew is particularly passionate about serving the LGBTQ+ community and spiritual seekers. He also has advanced training in the areas of PTSD, phobias, grief/loss, anger management, and interpersonal relationships.

Matthew is specially trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which assists clients to reprocess and resolve past trauma and grief. Utilizing the wisdom of psychodynamic and family systems approaches, Matthew helps his clients gain insight into their family of origin and sources of childhood and adult trauma. He also teaches DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) and Mindfulness coping strategies for emotion regulation and distress tolerance. In session, Matthew integrates these approaches to help his clients feel more relaxed and present, reconnect with their body and intuitive wisdom, and ultimately to align their choices and actions with their values and principles.

Matthew's style is engaging, insight-oriented and non-judgmental. When clients first start therapy, Matthew seeks to establish safety and trust, understand his clients' needs and concerns, and develop affirming therapy goals together.

Matthew received his M.A. in Counseling Psychology and Drama Therapy in 2001 from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. He has worked as an EMDR/DBT therapist at both adolescent and adult mental health treatment centers, including Reconnect Integrative Trauma Treatment Center in Pacific Palisades, Camden Center in Los Angeles, Avalon Malibu, Paradigm Malibu, and the Partial and Inpatient Hospitalization Programs at UCSF Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute. Outside of private practice, Matthew enjoys music, film, yoga, meditation, hiking and travel. Matthew offers both in-person and remote therapy sessions.

Message to clients

As a therapist, I seek to establish a genuine connection with my clients. I listen carefully and honor my clients' emotions, thoughts and needs while establishing trust and safety in the therapeutic encounter. I am a Humanist at heart and trust my clients' inner wisdom to guide our work together. I act as a mentor, guide and confidant while supporting my clients to develop their internal resources for healing, growth and recovery.

After gaining a solid understanding of my client's developmental, trauma and relationship history, I will discuss and explore treatment approaches that match my client's unique strengths, abilities and wisdom. I am flexible as a therapist and follow my client's lead and response to methods we may utilize together, gaining insight into their needs and tailoring future interventions to match their goals and interests.

As a practicing psychotherapist for over twenty years, I have developed an intuitive approach to working with clients and am ever-evolving in my response to client needs. Above all, I honor my client's ability to heal and to grow into the person they seek to become.
