Professional statement

Maurice Nicoleau is a Clinical Social Worker located in New York, NY. Maurice helps individuals who feel stuck in their lives, whether that’s in relationships, at work, with hobbies, or with their own development and growth. This feeling could be the result of a mental health condition like anxiety or depression, which leads to a lack of motivation or fear of change. Maurice also helps clients through major life transitions, grief, identity issues, and trauma symptoms.

Maurice’s approach to therapy stems from the importance of insight. As a psychodynamic therapist, Maurice teaches clients how to pay attention to their motivations, instincts, drives, and dreams. He then supports clients as they process through the origins and meaning behind them, developing a better understanding of themselves and their lives along the way. He also gently points out blind spots that clients have as they’re going through their lives. Maurice utilizes Motivational Interviewing techniques to help clients learn more about their readiness for change, then helps them make healthy changes when they’re ready.

Maurice understands how scary it can be to reach out for help. As a warm, relaxed therapist, he creates a sense of calm in each one of his sessions. He provides empathetic support as clients talk about their childhoods, relationships, challenges, roadblocks, and mental health goals. He believes that therapy is one of the most valuable investments that individuals can make, as it can lead to living the life that they want. He is a culturally-competent therapist who strives to make all clients feel welcome.

Message to clients

My journey to become a psychotherapist began around 20 years ago, when I became a patient and student of psychotherapy. I know first hand how challenging therapy can be, yet, I also know how rewarding it can be. Now, I enjoy helping others achieve more clarity in their lives. This clarity often leads to people feeling better about themselves and more alive in the world.

I see the ability to seek out help as a source of strength. It is hard, sometimes, to step outside of what we know and are most comfortable with. If you choose to start your journey of psychotherapy, you may find that a beautiful new world is waiting for you, beyond what you are most familiar with thus far. The best is yet to come.

I hope I will have the opportunity to support you on your journey.
