Professional statement

Dr. Max Craig Kusovitsky is a psychoanalyst specializing in unconscious, inner conflict in the mind and self. His patients are often referred to him after previous psychotherapeutic efforts have felt unhelpful, limited or rendered "stuck" in the relationship. Dr. Kusovitsky focuses on the material functioning in, and outside of awareness and without willful consent. This substance generates both felt and unfelt strife within individuals regardless of familiarity of symptoms, situation and diagnosis.

Dr. Kusovitsky founded his practice in service of integrating psychoanalytic tradition and current neuropsychological research. This effort is supported by continued evidence in the literature and patient outcome. Fundamentally, a patient entering into this work is in a position where compromise and suffering have narrowed their ability to lead their own life effectively. This manifests not only in undue limits of selfhood, but also of perception, of identity, of subjectivity, of relatedness, with profound constriction of agency and volition. Dr. Kusovitsky works with his patients to liberate them from their narrow bandwidth of experience and instead broaden perspective on their inner and outer lives. Suffice it to say: There is generative MEANING AND FUNCTION to a thought, feeling or behavior. The stickiness of depression, anxiety and other symptomatology carries a charge and weight; it does not operate immune and separate from ourselves.

Dr. Kusovitsky currently practices on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, with office plans for the Upper West Side and Bergen County, NJ by year end. He continues to offer teletherapy and tele-analysis in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic.

Message to clients

It is my experience that the most beneficial catalyst in the therapeutic process is to recognize the limits of will. That is to say, if we could will ourselves into pleasure, into betterment, we would. I wholeheartedly believe that from this starting point, a newfound relationship to your self and your perception will emerge. It is our job to organize your psychic-constellation in three dimensions, top down and bottom up, inside out and outside in, past to future and future to past.

There are no other imperatives involved in this expedition. You and I will participate in mutual discovery of both latent and unformulated material causing felt, frustrating pain and unfelt inner turmoil. Like an intrapsychic Sherpa, I am walking with you upstream and uphill through the disavowed, unconscious wilderness. Our task is to discover so as to understand, to later shed fantasy and make room to integrate reality, your real potential, your entire self.

It is an inalienable truth that for you to improve your genuine well-being, you must be heard, understood and felt not only by me, but most importantly, by you.
