Dr. Melanie Eckhoff is a psychologist in Bergen County, New Jersey. She works with adolescents and adults of all ages. Many of Dr. Eckhoff’s clients come in to address depression, anxiety, ADHD, personality disorders, and/or trauma. She also has advanced training in the areas of PTSD, Major Depression, ADHD, BPD, and anxiety disorders.
Dr. Eckhoff is trained in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), in which we teach distress tolerance skills, emotion regulation skills, mindfulness skills and interpersonal effectiveness skills to help manage emotions, tolerate distress and improve mood and relationships. We use cognitive behavioral therapy to challenge thoughts and cognitive distortions in order to change behavior and improve mood. In session, Dr. Eckhoff focuses on mindfulness and grounding exercises that can be used in stressful situations, DBT diary cards to track target behaviors and skill use, as well as automatic thought records to challenge negative thoughts. This approach supports clients so they are better able to manage their emotions, tolerate life's stressors and be effective in relationships.
Dr. Eckhoff's style is warm, goal oriented and validating. When clients first start therapy, she will establish a safe, validating, comfortable environment for the client, learn past history and set goals together.
Dr. Eckhoff received her Ph.D. from the New School For Social Research. She has worked at a VA hospital, community clinics, multiple outpatient centers as well as inpatient training. Outside of private practice, she enjoys traveling with friends, family and definitely with rescue dog Cayman. Dr. Eckhoff offers both in-person and virtual sessions
