Professional statement

Dr. Meredith Holmes is a Registered Psychological Associate in the State of California. They recently completed their doctorate in clinical psychology, and have been a social worker for over 16 years. Their doctoral-level clinical training as a psychotherapist has been in community mental health settings, as well as inpatient and outpatient medical settings. They have now begun their journey in private practice with the new Emerge Psychotherapy and Assessment Collective, which is a group of four therapists providing therapy and assessment to residents of California via telehealth (HIPAA-compliant videoconference or telephone).

Dr. Holmes has particular skills, knowledge, training, and passion in working with people along the lifespan from childhood through elderhood, especially from BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent, disabled, veteran, low income, and migrant backgrounds.

Dr. Holmes also has a background in visual arts, and considers themselves to be an animal lover and adventurer.

Message to clients

I support and empower clients who have a range of concerns including adjusting to life transitions, relationship challenges, exploring various aspects of identity (i.e., race, sexuality, gender), trauma, grief and loss, navigating the world as a neurodivergent person, and more. When appropriate, I utilize humor in the therapy room, and I also welcome exploring creative ways of healing through avenues such as art, music, and play. I will work together with you to determine your goals for therapy and use strategies that will best meet your specific needs. With genuine empathy and respect, I will meet you where you are at in your healing journey.

I view us humans and our struggles as interconnected with the people, communities, and societies in which we live. Mental health struggles are not just individualized experiences occurring in contexts that are healthy and well. To understand our suffering, we must take a multi-layered view of the experiences that impact us, from one-on one personal relationships to being marginalized people in societal contexts that operate on our dehumanization. To heal from our suffering, we must heal in relationship with others because we humans are not wired to cope with and heal from hardships all alone with no support from others. We are meant to work through difficulties collectively, including the two-person collective of a client and a therapist. Asking for help and being vulnerable are great strengths.
