Dr. Michael Perez Sosa is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Contemplative Psychotherapist based on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, NY and sees clients both in-person and virtually. He works with folks facing a myriad of challenges that span life transitions, loss, relationship/family difficulties, developmental impasses, desire for personal growth, purpose/meaning, professional/ academic challenges, and acculturation issues.
Michael's approach as a Contemplative Psychotherapist integrates a Psychodynamic Relational stance that is also trauma informed. Thus, he welcomes and explores the whole person by facilitating a safe and nonjudgmental space while establishing trust and compassion as the foundation for overcoming deep wounds. As a practitioner and student of contemplative science for over 14 years mentored by forerunners in the field, he interweaves insights and methods such as mindfulness meditation, compassion practices, breath-work, and imagery to complement treatment and foster healing and growth.
Michael is committed to facilitating a collaborative and culturally humble space to aid clients in overcoming a variety of sufferings including but not limited to anxiety, depression, trauma, and chronic stress. While the reason that people seek therapy may have common labels, such as “anxiety”, he believes there is no one-size-fits-all approach to treatment. Thus, his philosophy is to adjust his methods relative to each unique person, and not simply impose one approach over another.
Michael Perez Sosa, PhD received his doctorate and master’s in Clinical Psychology from The City College of New York and his bachelor’s in Psychology and Religion focusing on Indo-Tibetan Buddhism from Columbia University. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship at Counseling and Psychological Services of Columbia University and was a member of their Trauma Support Team.
