Neal Mitchell is an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist in Montclair, New Jersey and Union Square, New York. He works with Individual, Couples, Families, Men, Young adults and Adults of all ages. Many of Neal’s clients come in to address anxiety, depression, relationship issues, work-related stressors, self-esteem, racial trauma, infidelity, marital issues, isolation and loneliness. Neal is particularly passionate about serving members of communities of Color, specifically Black men and Men of Color. He also has training in Adjustment Disorder, Anxiety, Depression and Relational Issues.

Neal is trained in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, Couples counseling, Internal Family Systems, Gottman method, Family systems and therapy, Narrative Therapy, Multicultural Therapy and Premarital Counseling. With these treatment approaches, he examines thoughts, beliefs and behaviors that negative impact your mental, emotional and relational health and well-being. His treatment approaches allow you to identify and explore how impact of negative narratives on your well-being. He will assist you to reframe and re-author your narratives so that they align and match the values, emotional well-being and behaviors you desire and deserve in your life and relationships.

Neal Mitchell., MA, LAMFT received his master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Kean University. He has worked at Ibisanmi Relational Health Marriage and Family Therapy, PLLC, for 3 years as a Marriage and Family Therapy Intern Supervised by Dr. Christiana I. Awosan, LMFT while completing his master’s degree. Outside of private practice, He enjoys spending time with my family. Neal offers both online and in-person therapy sessions at Ibisanmi Relational Health.

In session, Neal focuses on Journaling exercise that will assist you to continue processing the work you’re doing in therapy outside of therapy. Neal’s approach to therapy supports working with all clients. He stated that “as a result of working with me, clients gain insight into how their life stories shape their identities, beliefs, and behaviors, fostering greater self-awareness. His clients gain the skill to separating their identities from their issues, clients develop healthier coping strategies and reduce feelings of shame and inadequacy.

He added that “clients often improve their interpersonal skills, enhancing their ability to communicate effectively in relationships and navigate differences”. When you work with Neal you will learn to take control of your narratives, he will empower you to redefine your experiences and envision new possibilities for your life.

Neal's style is collaborative, culturally relevant, goal-oriented, engaging and empathetic. According to Neal, “When clients first start therapy with me, I establish a welcoming and safe environment where clients feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and experiences. I encourage clients to share their stories, paying close attention to how clients share their experiences and feelings. I identify significant events, patterns, or themes in their narratives that influence their current situation. I establish a collaborative goal-setting work that allows my clients and I to set therapeutic goals that align with their values and desired outcomes”.
