Professional statement

Paul Boyer, LCSW, is a therapist in Oakland, California, who specializes in the treatment of anxiety, depression, and substance use, especially as they intersect with relationship challenges such as interpersonal reactivity and boundaries. Paul has also helped many clients with PTSD as well as ADHD and OCD diagnoses. He sees clients in person in Oakland and virtually throughout California and has availability, including evening availability, as of May 2025.

Additionally, Paul worked in corporate finance for many years before moving into the mental health field, and loves working with people contemplating or navigating similar life transitions, regardless of their other mental health needs. Paul also does a lot of work supporting high achievers seeing to attain peak performance in their chosen field.

Paul's therapeutic approach frequently uses Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), as well as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and other approaches. Paul's approach tends to focus more on clients' lived and felt experience of their challenges than on their intellectual understanding of such challenges.

Paul is a strong believer that if change is going to happen in therapy, it should start pretty quickly - the first three to eight sessions at most. He is also a strong believer in conscientious measurement and evaluation of therapeutic progress. The question, "Is this working?" should never be too hard to answer, whether the answer is yes or no.

Message to clients

Thank you for reaching out! I am glad to do a free phone consultation with all potential clients, and answer any questions you might have about my background and my approach to therapy. I am glad to discuss how we might approach whatever issues you hope to address.

I pride myself on being attentive and conscientious in therapy, and I work hard to make clients feel accepted while also challenging them to engage as fully as they can with the change process. I especially like working with clients who have been in talk therapy for many years and don't feel like they have a lot to show for it, which I have seen far too many times.

I enjoy this work a lot, and I think my clients would tell you that it shows. Again, thanks for your consideration.
