Professional statement

Dr. Paul Daanen is a clinical psychologist currently accepting new telehealth patients across 34 states. He specializes in the treatment of difficulties associated with both childhood and adult onset trauma.

Dr. Daanen has received specialized training in multiple approaches to trauma focused psychotherapy but uses EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy as his primary approach. EMDR often sees positive results in less time than other therapies. This approach has strong scientific backing for its effectiveness and has been endorsed by multiple US and international organizations (Veterans Affairs/Department of Defense (VA/DoD) Clinical Practice Guideline for Management of PTSD, the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS), the World Health Organization, the United Kingdom's National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, and the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council).

Dr. Daanen has worked with a wide variety of people, to include Active Duty military, first responders, sexual assault survivors as well as many people who have suffered a legacy of emotional abuse and/or neglect that still impacts them to this day.

Message to clients

Thanks for reading my profile. I have spent my career working with people who have suffered from some sort of traumatic experience in their life, which for most people leaves them feeling nervous, angry, sleepless and sometimes depressed. My experience has shown me that most people can and do feel significantly better with the right treatment.

Whether you have suffered from military trauma, a sexual assault, or childhood abuse and/or neglect, I am confident that I helped people similar to what you have been through. I am someone who will not judge you but rather will work with you to try and help you recover as soon as possible.

Personally, I am someone who has spent most of my adult life travelling and seeking experiences to learn from. I have lived outside of the US for 15 years and consider myself now a mishmash of different cultural influences and values. I like to cook and study languages as hobbies, both of which I really gained from my times living abroad.

Due to my personal characteristics, I am someone who is really curious to get to know and embrace the people I work with. I tend to work really well with like minded people who value the science and data behind the therapy to want to work with someone as curious as they are.
