Professional statement

Rachel Shubert is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Illinois who works with individuals ages 10 and up both in person and online. She is a certified mindfulness meditation teacher, an award-winning storyteller, and an expert on transforming envy into joy, as described in the New York Times best seller Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression–and the Unexpected Solutions.

Whether a client is coming to therapy because of a new crisis or a long-standing problem, Rachel loves working alongside the individual to uncover the truth. This includes the truth of who they really are, what they are really facing, what they really want, and how to proceed with authenticity and integrity.

Rachel uses a variety of approaches and typically blends deep psychodynamic work with practical skill-building and lifestyle change. In session, clients may encounter Jungian, mindfulness, CBT, somatic, and narrative techniques. Individuals are asked to work from their existing strengths and within the seeming paradox of radical self-acceptance vs. growth and change.

The foundation of Rachel’s practice is love of humanity and of the human experience. Her practice is welcoming to all races and ethnicities, all genders and sexualities, all body sizes and aesthetic presentations, all philosophical, political, spiritual, and religious affiliations, and all socioeconomic and professional backgrounds. Many creative, empathic, neurodiverse, and highly sensitive clients seem to find their way to Rachel.

Message to clients

Whether this is your first time seeking therapy or you’ve done this before, I am here so you can experience the relief and clarity that comes with being completely honest about yourself and the situations, beliefs, and behaviors that are creating a barrier to your desired life.

My intention is for you to feel safe, accepted, and seen. We will clarify your goals and assess progress regularly so that you can feel hopeful–or downright excited–about your life again.

It’s difficult to be vulnerable with a stranger, so let me go first. I have personal experience with depression, ADHD, binge eating disorder, divorce, and single parenthood, among other challenges. I grew up in a “colorful” family with its share of intergenerational trauma and drama. Looking back, I started therapy at least ten years later than I needed it. But I’ve come to love everything about the process of healing and post-traumatic growth.

Some things I find fascinating:

Learning to tolerate all emotions and deal with pain wisely.

Arriving at accurate diagnoses and when applicable, the correct medication(s). (My ADHD went undiagnosed until I was almost 41, which is not an uncommon experience among women.)

Using the intelligence of the body and the unconscious to get unstuck–because all too often, our thinking keeps us stuck.

Upgraded mindsets and habits, including self-compassion, gratitude, forgiveness, and present-moment awareness.

Rewriting life stories and reframing events in an empowering way.

Working with the content of dreams, fantasies, and psychedelic experiences.

I'm wishing you all the best in your search!
