Professional statement

Rebecca Kushins is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in Massachusetts and Washington states, who works with individuals across the lifespan, with a focus on LGBTQ+ community members. Her clients pride themselves on being intelligent, strong, committed, loyal and independent.  Yet still, they find themselves spinning, feeling groundless, unable to shake feelings of stress and anxiety.  They are not ones to ask for help lightly, but recognize that sometimes, their uncertainty is paralyzing.  They have tried mindfulness, meditation, yoga, exercise and more.  They are relieved for a time, until it all comes back, sometimes worse than before.  They doubt themselves, their capacity, their purpose.  This doubt affects them in many ways:  their daily lives, their careers, their relationships.  Rebecca is particularly sensitive to clients from the LGBTQ+ community, as well as clients who feel othered in many ways.

Rebecca’s approach is rooted in Internal Family Systems Therapy, a transformative evidence-based approach that helps clients to understand their naturally multiple mind, which includes a core Self that innately knows how to heal their many valuable parts. She works to help clients understand their systemic response to both internal and external stressors, and begin to problem-solve ways to introduce experiences of calm, connection and self-compassion, to choose to respond rather than react in the face of pain. All parts are welcome.

Rebecca’s first priority in starting with a new client is ensuring that they feel safe, seen, heard and understood.  She sees her own role as helping clients to deeply know their own worth, clarity, and confidence.  As a board certified telemental health provider, she offers the convenience of remote sessions to help make therapy a core component of your self-care calendar.  She looks forward to helping clients lead a mindful, insight-filled life – both inwardly and outwardly.

Message to clients

You are not sure what you need, where to turn; you feel strange reaching out for support - you wonder if you are even worth helping. You’ve tried a lot of things to help yourself - mindfulness, meditation, yoga, exercise and more. You are relieved for a time, until it all comes back, sometimes worse than before. On the outside, you pride yourself on being an intelligent person, a strong individual, a committed worker, a loyal friend. Perhaps you identify as a member of the LBGTQ+ community. Yet these days you find yourself spinning inside. You can’t shake these feelings of being out of control. Sometimes your behavior really is.

I can assure you: you are worth it. You’ve decided to seek out therapy because a part of you already knows this. You don’t yet know how, but you are ready to lead a mindful, insight-filled life – both inwardly & outwardly. You are ready to access that deep calm and compassion within yourself, no matter what difficulties you face every day.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) - Internal Family Systems is a powerfully transformative, evidence-based model of psychotherapy. We believe the mind is naturally multiple and that is a good thing. Our inner parts contain valuable qualities and our core Self knows how to heal, allowing us to become integrated and whole. In IFS all parts are welcome.

Mindfulness - Developing practices to encourage a state of active, open attention on the present

LGBTQIA topics - Exploring topics of sexuality, gender, and identity; coping with discrimination and oppression; navigating relationship, family, and cultural challenges

Anxiety - Coping with excessive worry, nervousness, or stress; intense discomfort in social settings (social anxiety); sudden and intense feelings of panic (panic disorder)

Depression - Providing support and promoting healing of hopelessness, low motivation and energy, sadness, irritability, sleep disturbance, and loss of interest and pleasure in life

Spirituality & religion - Exploring beliefs and practices related to meaning, existence, and spiritual health and healing; enjoying a deeper felt connection with the spiritual dimension of one's life
