Professional statement

Richard Sussman is a warm, highly experienced therapist who works with both individuals and couples seeking greater self-awareness, emotional healing, and personal growth. He specializes in helping clients navigate depression, anxiety, relationship challenges, infidelity, anger, grief, low self-esteem and life transitions. His clients often express how stress, shame, or a lack of self-acceptance have impacted their ability to feel present, fulfilled and connected.

Richard uniquely integrates Western psychotherapy with Eastern practices and principles, including mindfulness and meditation. Drawing on decades of professional experience and the study of contemplative practices, he guides clients to not only address current challenges, but to also develop a deeper relationship with the present moment and themselves. He believes that true healing happens when we learn to meet ourselves and each other with compassion, awareness and acceptance.

With a compassionate, practical, grounding and insightful therapeutic style, Rich offers a safe, supportive space where you can explore difficult emotions, let go of blame, shame and guilt, and connect with your vitality and inherent wholeness. His approach is collaborative and non-judgmental, helping you turn breakdowns into breakthroughs.

Rich earned his Master’s degree in Social Work and has decades of experience in both psychotherapy and mindfulness-based practices. He offers in-person sessions at his Upper West Side NYC and Weston, CT offices and online therapy for clients anywhere in NY and CT.

Message to clients

Choosing to engage in therapy is a meaningful and courageous step toward healing, growth and creating a more fulfilling life. I’m honored that you are considering embarking on this journey with me. I work with both individuals and couples, offering a safe, compassionate, supportive space where you can explore challenges, deepen self-awareness, reconnect with your innate sense of wholeness, and foster more fulfilling relationships.

After many decades of personal and professional experience—including nearly 40 years of marriage and raising two children—I understand the real struggles and joys that come with being human. I take a direct, honest, and deeply compassionate approach, blending psychotherapy with mindfulness practices to help you live with more ease, self-compassion and confidence. Together, we work to address current challenges, as well as patterns and limiting belief that no longer serve you so you can move toward a life of greater connection, purpose and joy.

Therapy is not about fixing what’s broken. Rather, it’s about uncovering the wholeness that has always been there. My approach is designed to help you stay present with your experiences and find greater freedom in your life. Through our work together, the intended outcome is for you to feel more empowered, compassionate and connected—to yourself, your partner, in all your relationships, and to the world around you. I look forward to supporting you on this path.
