Professional statement

Ryan Forsell is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Sierra Madre, CA. Ryan’s clinical expertise is in working with couples and individual clients on relationship-related issues, as well as working with men seeking exploration of deeper existential questions of life-purpose and meaning making in vocation, relationships, and life. Ryan also offers experiential Adventure Therapy, coaching services, and creative development guidance to clients seeking more unique forms of support from a licensed therapist.

Ryan’s work with clients is informed by his understanding of the importance of relationships. In his work with couples, Ryan draws on the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, an attachment-based therapy modality that fosters vulnerability and emotional connection between partners. As an avid adventurer and lover of outdoor sports, including rock climbing, skiing, backpacking, and surfing, Ryan also understands the importance of a healthy mind-body connection in overall wellbeing. To this end, he utilizes mindfulness practices in his work with clients who are interested in fostering a better connection between their mind and body.

Ryan received his Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Theology from Azusa Pacific University and then went on to work as a functional behavioral specialist in Phoenix, AZ, where he worked with youth and their families battling through significant traumas. Ryan later returned to school to obtain his Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Fuller Theological Seminary. Since graduating in 2017, Ryan has worked in multiple therapy settings and is now the owner of Praxis: A Psychotherapy Practice.

Message to clients

Do you ever feel like life is just a string of unremitting circumstances, and you are simply doing your best to keep your nose above water? Yeah, me too. Especially the way things have been going since the pandemic. When life is difficult for the collective society, life is unavoidably difficult for the individual in society. The truth is, we are in a season of dramatic social, technological and ecological change. The world is vastly different today than it was even a decade ago, and we feel it, one way or another.

The confusion and pain involved with such a crisis of change often leads to experiences of overwhelm, shut down / withdrawal, anxiety, depression. It can have the opposite effect too, leading to performance identities, perfectionism, and other overcompensating strategies.

Michael Meade posits, "Fate tends to place people in unremitting circumstances and will force hidden aspects of character and surprising qualities to the surface." In other words, genuine growth is about leaning in and integrating, not avoiding or compensating.

If this resonates with you, let's connect.

As someone who has navigated much chaos in my own journey, I know what it is like first hand to be overwhelmed by the bigness of the pain we experience. But I also know what it is like to face and grow from that pain. Allow me to be the guide who can help you develop those hidden aspects of your character and surprising qualities of your self on your journey toward wholeness.
