Professional statement

I'm Dr. Sahar Khoshakhlagh, and I'm delighted you're here. At Common Ground Counseling, I've created a warm space where your journey toward growth can unfold naturally. As both a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and life coach, I blend professional expertise with genuine care in every session. Your unique story matters deeply—with all its chapters and unwritten pages. Together, we'll explore the emotions coloring your experiences, uncovering hidden strengths while gently addressing limiting beliefs. Think of emotions as your inner compass—sometimes guiding you forward, sometimes spinning in circles. With compassion, we'll decode these signals to understand your needs, boundaries, and desires.

At Common Ground, you're seen in your beautiful complexity. I welcome every dimension of your story, whether you come alone, with a partner, or with family. Relationships function as ecosystems—when one element thrives, the entire system benefits. My approach combines evidence-based techniques with human understanding, customizing our work to transform roadblocks into stepping stones toward your envisioned life.

I specialize in helping people navigate life transitions, relationship challenges, and building emotional resilience. Using a systemic lens, I address trauma impacts, communication patterns, and the intricate dynamics that shape our connections with others. I offer practical tools to manage anxiety, build meaningful connections, and clarify direction.

My ideal clients stand at crossroads, ready for positive change even when the path isn't clear. Many struggle with anxiety, unfulfilling relationships, difficult transitions, or feeling "stuck" in patterns that no longer serve them. They seek a safe harbor to explore emotions, practical tools, validation, and guidance that respects their autonomy. Their goals include building authentic relationships, creating a values-aligned life, developing resilience, finding purpose, and breaking free from unhealthy patterns.

These individuals pursue therapy not just for symptom relief but for meaningful transformation, wanting someone who balances compassion with thoughtful accountability throughout their growth journey.

My Approach & Background

I specialize in individual, couples and family therapy, addressing anxiety, depression, conflicts, trauma and life transitions through an attachment-focused lens. With warmth and clinical expertise, I create a collaborative space for growth. A typical treatment plan begins with a thorough assessment and personalized goal-setting, followed by sessions integrating evidence-based approaches including systems therapy, emotionally focused therapy, CBT, mindfulness, and additional techniques tailored to your unique circumstances.Through our work together, you can expect reduced symptoms, improved communication, healthier boundaries, enhanced self-awareness and effective coping strategies. My clients often report feeling more empowered in their relationships, developing better emotional regulation and discovering renewed purpose.

My educational journey includes a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Peace Studies from California State University, Fullerton, a Master of Arts in Applied Psychology from New York University, and a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) in Couples and Family Therapy from the California School of Professional Psychology. My doctoral research focused on relational systems theory, adult attachment patterns, and sexual intimacy dynamics—knowledge I bring into each therapeutic relationship.
