Professional statement
Sara Lavner is a Licensed Psychoanalyst in downtown New York City who specializes in couples counseling, adoption, drama therapy, relationships, and anxiety. She sees men and women of all ages. One of Sara’s areas of expertise is working with couples. She is especially skilled at helping couples learn how to accept each other’s point of view and respect one another. Another area that she excels in is working with younger women who are looking for a relationship or have social anxiety.
Having been the first drama therapist to become a psychoanalyst in New York City, Sara especially enjoys working with individuals who are interested in exploring their creative side or are curious about who they are. She will integrate drama therapy when appropriate. This is especially useful for clients who are having trouble taking on a new role or becoming comfortable with a certain facet of their identity—whether it be as a parent, manager, partner, etc. Sara helps the client take on that role in a creative way.
Sara’s treatment approach is grounded in Psychoanalytic Therapy, and she helps individuals get to the root of the cause of their anxiety, including exploring experiences that happened in their childhood. However, she also looks at what the client is presently experiencing and how the two may connect.
Sara is thoughtful and incorporates humor into her sessions to make her clients feel more at ease. She wants all of her clients to reach their goals and experience all of the joy life has to offer. Before she was a therapist, Sara was an actress. She looks forward to meeting you near the 14th Street subway station.
