Professional statement

Sarah Kamens, PhD (she/hers) is a clinical psychologist who supports clients in finding their own internal compass. Dr. Kamens works with people facing a variety of challenges including difficulties in relationships or at work, depression, anxiety, trauma, stress, life transitions, social marginalization, discrimination, and existential concerns. Her integrative practice is grounded in humanistic-existential, person-centered, trauma-informed, and neurodiversity-affirming approaches.

Dr. Kamens supports clients in both exploring the meanings of experiences and implementing concrete strategies to address challenges that they face. She believes that therapy is about improving individual lives and about addressing the problems in the world that lead to psychological distress. Dr. Kamens is honored to be present with clients as they discover the great power that they have within themselves.

Dr. Kamens completed her predoctoral clinical training at the Yale University School of Medicine / Connecticut Mental Health Center in adult community mental health. Her postdoctoral clinical training took place at the Yale Specialized Treatment Early in Psychosis program. She received an MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology from Fordham University. She holds an MA in Communication from the European Graduate School in what is now the Division of Philosophy, Art & Critical Thought. She graduated from New York University (summa cum laude) with a BA in Psychology and English & American Literature.

In her own life, Dr. Kamens transitioned from a career in academia to private practice and is familiar with challenges facing students and faculty. She has lived abroad in Europe and the Middle East and draws on those experiences when working with clients facing migration and discrimination. Dr. Kamens is a member of the LGBTQ+ community and believes that love is love.

Message to clients

At its core, therapy is about listening to a voice deep within yourself. A voice that you might not have heard for … who knows how long. A voice that has been muffled or shut off because of all of those things in the world, and the sadness or anxiety that you’re feeling inside. Other people don’t always know how much you’re carrying on your shoulders. It takes a lot to just get through the motions of each day. So you’ve lost touch with that voice inside, and with the person it belongs to.

Therapy is about finding your way home to you. It is about remembering and being just who you are, where you need to be, at this moment in time. As an integrative and person-centered therapist, I tailor my approach specifically to you and your unique experiences. My role is to be a supportive guide as you embark on this unique journey of self-discovery.

The first step (reaching out!) can be the most difficult and takes a lot of courage. You can schedule a free consultation using the telephone or email address above. You can also learn more about my research, writing, and teaching on my website. I hope to meet you and look forward to answering any questions that you might have about my practice.
