Professional statement

Shaughnessy Herren is a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate supervised by Leslie Larson, LPC-S in Austin, TX specializing in young adults and adults experiencing a wide variety of issues including depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, trauma, grief, and life transitions. Many of her clients struggle with feeling overwhelmed facing their resonating thoughts and behaviors and react to daily situations with heightened emotional responses such as anger, sadness, and insecurity. Shaughnessy works with her clients to better understand what the current challenges are, in which ways they are manifesting, and how to confront these issues in a meaningful and lasting way.

In session with Shaughnessy, clients learn more about their thoughts and behaviors as well as how their thoughts and behaviors impact their emotions. Using integrated therapy approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Shaughnessy teaches clients to be more self aware by helping them identify harmful thought patterns, challenge these thoughts and utilize experimentation/exposure to increase likelihood of behavioral change. With unique goals for each client, Shaughnessy uses values and goal-setting to help clients identify places for improvements and build new habits.

Shaughnessy earned her degree from Texas A&M University. She believes that every challenge is an opportunity to grow and connect with ourselves. Together she hopes to help her clients develop a new relationship with themselves and from overcoming life obstacles, learn to nurture the parts of themselves that have been wounded.

Message to clients

I understand that getting started can often be the toughest part of working on these deep-rooted beliefs and unhealthy behaviors that keep us in the cycle of depression and anxiety. I place a ton of emphasis on the client-therapist relationship because of that very reason. I want you to understand and know that I am human as well, and this is a partnership with you as the lead. I believe that you know yourself the best, and there are times that you may struggle to access that information. That's where I come in! I will not pretend to know what's best for you, but I will challenge you to try new ways of thinking/new behaviors. My goal is to help you get to a place of self-sufficiency. This means there will be work/assignments outside of our time together that will further enhance your growth and healing.

I enjoy working with changing your thought patterns, but I am also aware that sometimes verbalizing distressing thoughts or emotions can be difficult. Due to that, I love to incorporate creative and somatic activities involving music, art, metaphors, breathwork, etc.

I want to encourage you to show up as your most authentic self. Having a non-judgmental, unbiased space to go to process your thoughts and feelings can make a big difference in your mental health maintenance and improvement. I hope that by creating this space for you, you will gain a better understanding of yourself, your thought processes and improve your overall health.
