Shawna holds a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Western Carolina University. She is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate and a Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist Associate. She has worked as a counselor within the local detention facility and also spent time working in residential facilities addressing substance use disorders. Prior to completing her masters level education Shawna worked in the community for over 10 years in various roles. She has worked extensively with individuals experiencing intimate partner violence providing crisis counseling and safety planning. Additionally, she has spent significant time offering trauma informed supportive services and trauma specific group programming within the local jail.
Shawna has experience working with individuals who have experienced trauma, complex trauma, anxiety, depression, addiction, difficult transitions, and loss. She offers person-centered, strengths-based counseling, that is trauma-informed. When appropriate, she utilizes evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. She also incorporates polyvagal theory, attachment theory, mindfulness and grounding skills.
Shawna believes that people are resilient. She also believes that we all have much to learn from one another and she brings humility and sense of curiosity to her work with others.
