Professional statement

Dr. Shawna Urbanski is a licensed clinical psychologist located out of Colorado who works with people ages 13 and up (12 and up in Colorado per Colorado Behavioral Health statute CRS12-245-203.5). She provides telehealth sessions within Colorado, as well as PSYPACT Commission approved states; she is certified through the Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology (APIT) as of April 2024.

Dr. Urbanski's approach to therapy is in applying techniques eclectic to each individual's needs, but her focus does lean on integrating Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) principles. This allows us to find more flexibility in one's definition of self helping to find balance between one's "positive" and "negative" aspects to create a "positively negative" self-perception. This flexible view permits us to use less rigid judgment and shift from a mindset of "controlling" ourselves to managing our reactions through compassion.

Dr. Urbanski earned a Master's in Counseling Psychology in 2005 from the University of Denver and went on to earn a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Denver in 2010. Prior to her graduate work, she was employed within the Developmental Disability system in Colorado for 5 years, after graduating with a Bachelor's in psychology from Colorado State University, which influences her work to assist those impacted (directly and indirectly) by DD/ID issues. She has worked in a variety of settings including forensic inpatient units, community mental health and engaging in health psychology within primary care settings. She has created and given multiple professional presentations on topics such as personality disorders, understanding differences between mental health conditions and DD/ID symptoms, de-escalation strategies within healthcare settings.

Message to clients

Are you feeling overwhelmed or stuck, struggling to understand your emotions or navigate life’s challenges? Seeking therapy can feel intimidating, but it’s one of the most empowering steps you can take toward healing and self-discovery. Many of us have been taught to suppress our struggles, to “tough it out,” or to feel shame about needing help. But the truth is, asking for support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

My role is to guide you in understanding yourself better—your thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations—so you can embrace your full, authentic self. Therapy isn’t about fixing you; it’s about helping you reconnect with yourself and appreciate your unique journey. Whether you’re dealing with life transitions, low self-esteem, mood swings, or simply trying to find balance, I’m here to support you in finding a path forward that’s genuine for you.

I offer telehealth sessions to make therapy more accessible and flexible. Together, we’ll explore the connection between your mind and body, helping you to achieve a healthy balance fostering acceptance and growth. No matter where you are in life, you are normal—your experiences, challenges, and strengths are all a part of what makes you, you.

Taking this step shows you deserve more in life, and I would be honored to walk with you on this journey. Let’s talk about how we can work together to help you feel more confident and connected to yourself.
