Professional statement

Dr. Shawna Urbanski is a licensed clinical psychologist located out of Colorado who works with people ages 13 and up (12 and up in Colorado per Colorado Behavioral Health statute CRS12-245-203.5). She provides telehealth sessions within Colorado, as well as PSYPACT Commission approved states; she is certified through the Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology (APIT) as of April 2024.

Dr. Urbanski's approach to therapy is in applying techniques that are eclectic to each individual's needs, but focuses on integrating more Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) principles in finding more flexibility in one's definition of self and finding a balance between one's "positive" and "negative" aspects to create a "positively negative" self-perception.

Dr. Urbanski earned a Master's in Counseling Psychology in 2005 from the University of Denver and went on to earn a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Denver in 2010. Prior to her graduate work, she was employed within the Developmental Disability system in Colorado for 5 years, after graduating with a Bachelor's in psychology from Colorado State University, which influences her work to assist those impacted (directly and indirectly) by DD/ID issues. She has worked in a variety of settings including forensic inpatient units, community mental health and engaging in health psychology within primary care settings. She has created and given multiple professional presentations on topics such as personality disorders, understanding differences between mental health conditions and DD/ID symptoms, de-escalation strategies within healthcare settings.

Message to clients

Making the decision to pursue therapy is not an easy one and I honor that throughout the entire journey I take with someone. While mental health is becoming destigmatized, there are still so many factors which influence our struggle with actually seeing therapy as an empowering choice versus the often misperceived "sign of weakness."

Your human is your strength and your human is pain, suffering, joy, accomplishment, struggle and so much more! Therapy is not about fixing you but about finding you, embracing you, and learning how to appreciate everything about you good, bad and ugly.

As the saying goes, nothing in life comes easy but just because things are difficult does not mean they have to be hard. I applaud you for taking this first step in finally realizing what you DO deserve in life and I would be honored to speak with you more about it!
