Professional statement

Sophie Holliday is a therapist offering play therapy and counseling services for children, adolescents, and young adults residing in Oregon. Sophie values a client-centered approach - meaning she aims to affirm your identities, understand your unique life experiences and respect the expertise you bring to your story. Sophie works towards aligning you with your authentic self by helping you tap into existing strengths and inherent wisdom, develop insight into the obstacles appearing in your way, and identify new solutions towards change. Sophie helps to support and facilitate growth in the areas you feel stuck and overwhelmed, whether individually or interpersonally. In her practice, Sophie meets you where you are with empathy, unconditional regard, and non-judgmental curiosity.

Sophie uses an integrative style combining social constructionist therapies including Narrative and Solution-Focused when working with individual clients. As an artist and creatively-inclined person, Sophie often incorporates expressive art modalities to facilitate new perspectives, growth and healing. I employ a trauma-informed and social justice lens when helping clients develop awareness of self in relation to social surroundings. When working with couples or other relationship configurations, I blend Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and The Gottman Method to support increased understanding and the development of more sustainable and effective communication.

Sophie is registered as a Professional Counselor Associate with the Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists (OBLPCT) and is currently supervised by Dr. Kimberly Jayne, LPC, NCC, RPT-S. She earned both a Master of Science degree in Relationship and Family Counselor Education and certificate in Adoptive & Foster Family Therapy from Portland State University. Sophie has specialized training in The Gottman Method Couples Therapy (Level 1), Emotionally-Focused Couples and Individual Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Child-Centered Play Therapy and Child-Parent Relationship Therapy.

Message to clients

We all go through times when we feel lost, stuck, alone and uncertain. Perhaps you are experiencing depression, anxiety, or relationship conflict; struggling with identity issues or self-esteem; searching for meaning and purpose; or experiencing stress during a challenging life transition. I can help you tap into existing strengths and wisdom, develop insight into obstacles appearing in your way and identify new solutions towards change. If you are looking to process through trauma or grief in the context of a safe and therapeutic relationship - we can find relief and clarity together.

In my practice, I welcome all human beings regardless of age, sexual, gender, spiritual, religious, racial, and cultural identity as well as relationship configuration, body size or ability, socioeconomic or citizenship status. At the start of our therapeutic relationship, please expect a conversation in which I invite us both to share salient identities, both visible and invisible. I value a baseline of cultural humility in all aspects of counseling and will continuously strive towards uncovering any personal biases or ethnocentric world views by seeking out educational, consultive, and training experiences. I am not the expert on your life though I may invite you to explore how systems of power, privilege, and oppression influence your presenting concerns.
