Professional statement

Sukey Bernard is a psychotherapist in lower Manhattan. She currently offers both in-person and virtual sessions.

Sukey has a special focus in working with those in creative fields and pursuits, adolescents and adults who identify as LGBTQIA+, and those seeking support for challenges related to attachment wounds, trauma, and social alienation. She brings special attention to intergenerational trauma and the way power and identity impact us all, and welcomes patients from all backgrounds.

Sukey received her MSW from Smith College School for Social Work, where she studied relational psychotherapy and liberation health, and completed postgraduate training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at the William Alanson White Institute. She graduated with a BA in Sociology from Wesleyan University.

Message to clients

I see therapy as a generative process that can help people feel more comfortable in themselves and more empowered to make meaningful changes in their lives.

My approach is informed by contemporary psychoanalysis, family systems, DBT therapies, and my social work training. I help people cope with but also further understand and name their emotions, moods, and thoughts in their full complexity—including those that shift and uncover real-time in our work together. I believe that to create lasting change, we have to attend to your inner world: your unspoken thoughts, formative relationships, life experiences, and confounding stuck places — the deeper roots of your distress. We’ll unearth patterns of relating and being that got you to where you are, but may unwittingly be limiting your further expansion. As you build greater self understanding and compassion, psychic knots can loosen.

Feel free to reach out to schedule a free phone consultation if you think we could be a good fit. I look forward to meeting you.
