Professional statement

Sultana Karim is a Licensed Professional Counselor located in Woodbridge, VA. Sultana has expertise in working with women who are pregnant, want to get pregnant, or already have children. She provides kind, empathetic support for mothers who experience postpartum depression or anxiety. Often, these clients feel immense pressure to perform their role of mother without flaw, only to become burnt out. The changes in their bodies during and after pregnancy might also lead to feelings of emptiness, disconnection from others including their new baby, hopelessness, or even self-harm. Sultana helps these women to reconnect with their authentic selves and to practice effective self-care so that they can enjoy their everyday lives.

Sultana practices strengths-based, person-centered care in her therapy practice. She believes that every person she works with has innate strengths that can be harnessed for healing, growth, and discovery. Sultana teaches clients how to decrease negative thought patterns, including the harmful self-talk that leads to depressive or anxious moods. By offering Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), ), Play Therapy, Expressive Arts and Art Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Mindfulness, Perinatal Yoga (Prenatal, Postpartum, Fertility Yoga), Strength-Based Approach, Person- Centered Approach, clients learn how to replace negative thoughts with positive, helpful ones that affirm the self. She helps clients process their traumas and helps clients work towards their goals by breaking their goals down into smaller, achievable steps as they process through their emotions.

Sultana earned a Master’s degree from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. She strives to boost each client’s natural resiliency and to empower her clients to prioritize their own mental health, especially as they care for their loved ones.

Message to clients

You feel like you have to be a perfect mom (parent). You often feel inadequate and judged by yourself and others around you. You feel anxious about not doing enough and worry about your baby’s safety. You desperately need a break and struggle with asking for help. You don’t want to be perceived as weak so you would often tell others that you are okay or you can do it by yourself. You struggle getting out of bed due to not getting enough sleep and constantly waking up throughout the night. You feel like this will never end.

You want to live your life without guilt, shame, and anxiety. You want to feel like yourself again. You want to be confident in yourself and enjoy mother(parent)hood to the fullest. I can help!

I make therapy convenient and easy for your busy life by offering a free 15 minute phone consultation and virtual sessions. Clients who work with me know that I have a straightforward and down to earth approach. Check out my website and schedule a consultation call today.
