Professional statement

Susan Horvat is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor located in Beverly Hills, CA. Susan provides excellent clinical care for clients who suffer from mood disorders such as anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder. She also specializes in supporting clients who have personality disorders, specifically Borderline Personality Disorder, and feel disconnected from themselves and others and find themselves constantly in conflict with loved ones. She is passionate about helping clients who previously experienced traumatic events move forward in their lives.

In her practice, Susan uses Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to give clients the tools they need to manage their emotions. She teaches clients different ways to handle feelings of stress, anger, frustration, and sadness. Using these coping skills, clients learn to take time to assess their emotions before reacting to them. Susan also uses a therapy approach called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which helps clients process through traumatic memories to decrease their impact on the present day. Susan is certified in DBT by the Linehan Board of Certification.

Susan earned her Master’s degree from the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology. Clients who work with Susan grow their resiliency through mindfulness, expression, and the ability to respond to stressors effectively. Susan empowers her clients to take care of themselves and take the next step in their mental health journey.

Message to clients

It is both a great honor and a great responsibility to walk alongside someone as they navigate their life journey. Whether you are looking to manage stress, learn how to regulate intense and overwhelming emotions, change ineffective behaviors, heal from trauma, or explore your sense of meaning and purpose in this life, I would be honored to support you in realizing your goals. I use an inclusive, collaborative, supportive and strengths-based approach and rely both on my clinical experience as well as evidence-based treatments (e.g., Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)) to customize a treatment plan with you.

I believe that the therapeutic alliance is a relationship between equals. This means that we will collaborate. You are the expert on you, so you will educate me on your history, experience, values, and goals; I will provide psychoeducation, support, professional guidance, as well as tools and strategies that you can put into practice immediately. The sessions may not always be comfortable or easy, and it may take some time to experience the changes you seek, but I will be with you each step of the way.

I look forward starting our work together soon.
